KAPOOR & SONS: 3/5

"Kapoor & Sons" is another movie lately which is based on the concept of dysfunctional family. I was very impressed with Zoya Akhtar's Dil Dhadakne Do which also excited me to watch Shakun Batra's Kapoor & Sons which is produced by Karan Johar. With actors like Rishi Kapoor, Rajat Kapoor, Ratna Pathak Shah, Fawad Khan, Alia Bhatt and Siddharth Kapoor and the kind of plot the movie begun with, I was expecting it to be one of those movies that will always remain in our "Movies" folder but unfortunately, it's not that good. Well, if you have already lost your trust in the movie because of the last sentence, let me tell you that it's not bad but just that it's not excellent as my expectations were very high from it.

The movie stays on the main plot right from the plumber scene itself in which the whole family starts fighting with each other. Since then, there are only arguments or extremely heated moments. Rishi Kapoor, who plays grandfather in the movie, has only one dream of having a Family Group Photo before he collapses but his wish stays unfulfilled even when the family reunites after years. They are still going through cold wars or almost physically beating each other. In such a tragic family scenes come Alia Bhatt on the screen to give you the much needed break and with her stellar performance and bubbliness, impresses you once again. It has become hard to decipher if Alia plays characters or characters play Alia. She is so perfect in each of her films that you can't single out a flaw. Incredible!

Rishi Kapoor is funny with most of his dialogues but finds it hard to give one of his best performances because of the heavy make-up he has to wear. Fawad Khan walks so easily in this movie that in each of the frame, you'll realize why he gets countless accolades for his performances. Siddharth Malhotra's best performance according to me. The best performances come by Rajat Kapoor and Ratna Pathak Shah. You will just want to watch both of them on screen either in the silent scenes or violent ones. They are just perfect and with each scene, they just keep getting better.

The songs are wonderful- both catchy and melodious. Dialogues are also pitch perfect. The biggest problem with the movie is that you know how it is going to end. The predictability pisses you off in the pre-climax otherwise Kapoor and Sons is a good movie that you can spend your time with. I give it 3 stars out of 5.

 Thanks.
