NIL BATTEY SANNATA: 4/5

Nil Battey Sannata is a Bollywood movie. The previous sentence must have been surprising as you would not have heard about this title before. But let me tell you, it is one of those beautiful movies in our Hindi cinema that will always be listed whenever brilliant films will be talked about. And one thing that has impressed me more than anything is that the direction of the movie is done by a debutante- Ashwini Iyer Tiwari. Not for a single frame will  you feel that a newcomer is making this movie. Right from the first frame to the last, you will stay glued to the screen. When we say that script is the heart of the movie, some people deny it by saying that commercial cinema doesn't need it. But such movies like "Nil Battey Sannata" proves that an excellent script is must even if the story isn't much complicated with umpteenth number of twists and turns.

The story is about a mother who is very helpless because her daughter isn't interested in studying because she finds Mathematics almost impossible to grasp. When her mother asks her what she wants to become in life, she ends up saying that the way doctor's son becomes doctor, in the same way as her mother, even she is going to be a housemaid. This saddens her mother a lot. She gets an advise from her employer to join school herself in 10th std with her daughter so that some change comes in her daughter's attitude. And the fun in the movie begins from here.

The good thing about NBS is that it doesn't become preachy even for a second. Even a social message isn't given through a dialogue or two. Just through the characters of the movie, writer have managed to convey what she wanted to. Swara Bhaskar's performance is so flawless that you curse yourself for watching her in Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo where the script doesn't allow her to come out of the shell. Her helplessness and irritation can be nicely seen through her eyes and facial expressions. The girl who have played her daughter have also done a great job in playing a ridiculous daughter. Haha! The classroom scenes are wonderful to watch. And even when this movie isn't made from commercial point of view, even then it can be watched more than once. It has the power of holding the audience through its flawless screenplay, story, performances and writing. I give this movie 4 stars out of 5.

 Thanks.
